Kantuketan, digital exhibit
In partnership with the Autonomous Basque Government’s Department for Diaspora Relations and the North Basque American Organization (NABO), the Basque Cultural Institute has created an interactive application bringing together the main content of the travelling exhibition on Basque song, Kantuketan (2001-2006).
This quadrilingual application (Basque – French – English – Spanish) enables users to listen to almost 120 Basque songs and interviews with singers and musicians as well as view archive images which were present in the exhibition. The application is divided into four main sections representing the exhibition’s main themes.

1. The History of Basque Song
Main subject: Basque song from the 14th century to the beginning of the 1960’s. Oral masterpieces and the work of song collectors.
Content:
- A general introductory article;
- A selection of 40 songs to listen to in full, each with an explanation.
2. Moments in Song
Main subject: moments in life of which song is part in the Basque Country: family, work, religion, festivals, concerts, carnivals, festivals, etc.

3. Living Memory
Main subject: Basque song from the 1960’s to the present day. From new Basque song to the diversity of styles including Basque rock.

4. Accounts & Archives
Main subject: extracts of interviews with singers and musicians and video archives on Basque song.
Content:
- Extracts of interviews with Maddi Oihenart, Juan-Carlos Pérez, Aitor Gorosabel, Beñat Achiary and the Aire Sisters (subtitled in the different languages)
- Video archives: the first pastorale filmed in Soule in 1930, the improvisers Mattin and Xalbador in 1973, the birth of Basque rock with Niko Etxart (1975) etc.
Technical information
The application can be used on both PC and MAC with either a mouse or a tactile screen.
