The "new Basque singing" arose in the 1960s, influenced by the international folk movement and with certain young singers opting to sing both old and contemporary songs in Basque as well as their own compositions. Rock music came onto the Basque cultural scene about 1975. Today, there is no musical style that is not sung in Basque. Over the last thirty years, Basque singing has injected new life into the recovery of the language at a local level.
